I would like to comment about the cinemas in this article, The Broadway Cinema was on the corner of Tanners Hill and New Cross Road, not the Odeon which was further along in Deptford Broadway and corner of Deptford Church Street, you hade the Empire Musical Hall in New Cross Road, and a cinema nicknamed the Bug Hutch in Deptford High Street (I think it was on the corer of Hyde Street). The Deptford I knew and grew up in was a lovely friendly place and had wonderful shops that people came from miles to. My father was borne and bred in Deptford and went to Stanley Street School. My mum was borne in Lewisham but was broought up in Deptford and went to Frankham Street School. Amazingly the schools are still standing. Oh for the good old days.

My dad was borne in Deptford Speedwell Street and went to Stanley Street and my mum was borne in Molesworth Streeet in Lewisham and then moved to Hosier Street Deptford, where she went to Frankham Street school also. There was a picturehouse down Deptford High nicknamed the Bug Hutch, which was on the corner of Hyde Street, Deptford. Both my mum and dad lived in the Boroughs of Deptford and Lewisham all their lives, except for the war years. I still live in the Borough of Lewisham, but was borne in Leicester where my mum was evacuted too.

Hi Kathy,

It's always good to hear stories from past lives who lived in Deptford. Thanks for sharing your treasured memories.

Best regards
